Circular Cities

To position Holcim—a leading manufacturer of sustainable building materials—as a frontrunner in the journey toward net-zero emissions by 2050, we recognised the imperative to focus on urban areas, which are responsible for over 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In collaboration with Holcim, Bloomberg Media developed the Circular Cities Barometer, a tool designed to assess and highlight cities excelling in circular and sustainable living. Complementing the Barometer, we created a series of micro-documentary films featuring Holcim partners, showcasing their success stories in advancing sustainability.

Circular Cities

Visual Identity

As Art Director, my role was to create a visual identity that resonated with the Bloomberg audience while effectively conveying themes of circularity and sustainability. This cohesive design system was applied across video content and an immersive website, ensuring a unified and engaging user experience.

Circular Cities Hub

The website's centrepiece was the Circular Cities Barometer, which utilized a proprietary algorithm to evaluate how 30 global cities that are transitioning from a linear economy to a circular economy focused on reducing, reusing, and recycling. London topped the list, driven by its leadership in circular buildings and investment, followed by Seattle, Copenhagen, Paris, and Zurich.

Beyond the Barometer, the site featured videos presenting the latest ideas on Circular Cities, along with the micro-documentary series highlighting world-class developments in this area.

Microdoc Series

The two-part micro-documentary series showcased exemplary circular city developments in Boston and Milan. One episode explored how Milan's metro system is shaping a greener city through reducing, reusing, and recycling initiatives. Another highlighted Boston's Winthrop Center, a skyscraper designed with Passive House principles to create a more sustainable skyline.

As Art Director, my role included defining the visual aesthetic of these videos. I created titles and lower thirds, as well as producing animation sequences that emphasised the modern architecture and construction techniques employed to build more circular cities.
